What makes the Z-Pak different from a standard 3-4 clutch pack?
Standard packs use double-sided frictions separated by steel plates. The Z-Pak uses a "single-sided" design where the friction material is bonded directly to the plates in a way that eliminates the need for traditional separate steels. This design significantly increases the heat-sink capacity, allowing the pack to stay cooler and last longer under heavy loads.
Does this pack increase the number of clutch surfaces?
Yes. The Z-Pak design allows for more friction surfaces within the same amount of space (the 3-4 drum). This increased surface area distributes the load more evenly, which prevents the "coning" or warping common in high-performance or heavy-towing applications.
Is the Z-Pak compatible with stock 4L60E transmissions?
Absolutely. It is a "drop-in" upgrade. You do not need a special drum or custom input shaft to use the Z-Pak; it is designed to fit the original equipment (OE) 3-4 clutch housing for TH700-R4, 4L60, 4L60E, and 4L65E.
What is the recommended clearance for a Z-Pak installation?
While you should always follow the included Raybestos instruction sheet, a typical target clearance for the Z-Pak is between .050" and .070". Because of the unique single-sided design, the clearance feels different than a traditional stack, so using a feeler gauge is essential.
Do I still need to soak these in ATF before installation?
Yes. Even though the Z-Pak uses advanced X-32 friction material, soaking the plates in clean ATF for at least 20 minutes is critical to prevent initial glazing and ensure a smooth first engagement.
